Andrew is Executive Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development for Advance Publications, Inc. and a founding partner of AVP. Since joining Advance in January 2011 he has been responsible for growth initiatives at the holding company and at its operating units. He is the senior executive responsible for guiding the strategy of Advance and its businesses, undertaking portfolio reviews, mergers and acquisitions, investments and new business initiatives. Andrew joined Advance from Yahoo! Inc., where he led the digital media company’s Corporate Development team. Prior to joining Yahoo!, Andrew held several executive positions during a five-year tenure at General Electric. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at InVision Technologies and a Vice President on the Internet investment banking team at Merrill Lynch. Andrew was named to the 2011 Silicon Alley 100, recognized as one of Ad Age’s 2013 “Media Mavens” and was honored with a 2011 TechFellow Award for General Management. Andrew received his BA from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and his JD from New York University School of Law.
David is a founding partner of AVP and has over eighteen years of experience as an equity investor in small and mid-sized growth companies in the technology, media and communications sectors. Prior to co-founding AVP, David was a partner of Augusta Columbia Capital Partners, a technology focused investment firm. Prior to co-founding Augusta Columbia, David was a Managing Director of TPG Growth LLC, the growth equity and middle market investment platform of TPG, where he led the firm’s global technology investing effort. Prior to joining TPG Growth, David was a partner at Francisco Partners, L.P., a technology-focused private equity investment firm. David began his investing career as an associate at Summit Partners. David is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Nativo, Inc. and UCT Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: UCTT) and has been a board member of both public and private growth companies including PowerPlan Inc., Artel Inc, Metrologic Instruments, Inc., and Mitel Networks Corporation. David received an AB in Public Policy and an AM in International Development Policy from Stanford University, and received an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Tom is the Chief Financial Officer of AVP and has over eleven years of experience in alternative asset management. Prior to joining AVP, Tom was the Chief Financial and Compliance Officer of RedBird Capital Partners, a growth equity firm. Prior to joining RedBird, Tom was Senior Vice President of Finance at The Electrum Group, a natural resource focused asset manager. Prior to joining The Electrum Group, Tom was the Chief Financial and Compliance Officer at Augusta Columbia Capital Partners, a technology focused investment firm. Tom received a BS in Accountancy from Villanova University, is a Certified Public Accountant and holds the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation from the AICPA. He is a member of the AICPA, the New York State Society of CPAs and serves on the State Society’s Private Equity and Venture Capital Committee.
Courtney joined the founding team at AVP as a principal. Prior to joining AVP, Courtney was a founding Principal of American Express Ventures. During her tenure at American Express Ventures, she completed investments in companies such as RetailNext, Bill.com, IfOnly, SavingStar and Learnvest (acquired by Northwestern Mutual). Prior to co-founding American Express Ventures, Courtney ran business development and partnership efforts at Plum District, a local market oriented e-commerce business. Courtney began her career at GCA Savvian Advisors, where she was an investment banking associate in the firm’s Internet group. Courtney received her BA in Economics from Columbia University.
Matt has spent his career investing in, operating and financing technology businesses. Before joining AVP, he led web marketing for the direct-to-consumer business at SquareTrade. Prior to SquareTrade, he spent several years at Khosla Ventures helping invest in and grow leading technology businesses across various stages. In addition, he has co-founded two bootstrapped, early stage startups, Champion Protection and TrackingIQ. Matt started his career as an analyst at Morgan Stanley. He graduated with a B.A. and M.S., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania.
Alex has spent his entire career focused on technology companies. Prior to joining AVP in August 2015, he was an Associate at ICONIQ Capital, a late-stage technology growth equity fund with $1.5 billion of committed capital. Alex began his career at Morgan Stanley in the Global Technology Group, where he executed mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt offerings, and private placements. Alex received his BBA from the University of Iowa.
Sam joined the AVP team as an analyst in August 2015. Prior to joining AVP, Sam was an analyst at Econet Wireless, where he was a member of the strategic development initiatives team, and focused on incubating new mobile products and services. Sam received a BA in Political Science from Yale University. Sam was the captain of Yale’s golf team, and recipient of the William Neely Mallory Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior male at Yale.
John Murray is a Founding Partner of AVP and Senior Advisor to the firm. John has over twenty years experience in Silicon Valley. For ten years preceding the formation of AV Partners, John was a partner at GCA Savvian Advisors. Prior to Savvian, John was a Managing Director in Technology at Deutsche Bank Alex Brown. Prior to DBAB, John was with Robertson Stephens focused on venture capital services and was at Franklin Templeton in the institutional asset management business. John began his career at Drexel Burnham Lambert in New York, earned an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and received his Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University.
